One of the more common requests that I get from clients is whether I can help them find and book an Airbnb for their next trip.
It’s a fair question. Airbnb can be a good fit for some trips, and I understand why travelers are drawn to the flexibility, space, and sense of “living like a local.” That said, I’ve made a deliberate decision not to work with Airbnb as part of my travel advisory services.
This choice isn’t about judgment; it’s about responsibility, ethics, and my commitment to offering only accommodations I can personally stand behind and support.
Why Travel Advisors Don’t Book Airbnb
Airbnb operates on a direct host-to-guest model and does not allow third-party bookings under its terms of use. As a professional travel advisor, this means I’m unable to book on your behalf, formally manage the reservation, or act as an advocate in the way I can with hotels and vetted accommodation partners.
Just as importantly, Airbnb listings are not consistently vetted. I don’t have reliable visibility into the true condition of the property, the accuracy of the listing, or the consistency of the experience from one stay to the next.
Airbnb Safety, Quality, and Accountability Concerns
One of the core values of my work is advocacy. I work with hotels before my clients arrive to advocate for upgrades, special requests, and any extra accommodations needed. And when something goes during a trip, my clients expect. and deserve, support. The direct relationships I have with hotels help me provide this level of support and chose hotel partners that I know care deeply about providing exceptional service.
With Airbnb, that support simply isn’t possible. If a property isn’t as promised, a host cancels last minute, or a safety issue arises, I don’t have a clear escalation path or meaningful leverage to intervene. There are also well-documented Airbnb scams and safety concerns, from misleading listings to fraudulent hosts. I know many people who have only had good experiences, but have heard other horror stories that are honestly shocking and scary.
Because I can’t verify standards or advocate effectively, I can’t responsibly recommend or book Airbnb stays for my clients.
My Responsibility as Your Travel Advisor
When you work with me, you’re trusting my recommendations and relying on my experience to guide important decisions about where you’ll stay. That responsibility only works when I can fully stand behind the accommodations I book and support you if something doesn’t go as planned.
If I can’t do that, as is the case with Airbnb, then I’m not able to provide the level of service my clients expect or that I expect of myself.
Considering the Impact of How We Travel
For travelers seeking ethical and sustainable travel options, it’s also important to consider the broader impact of short-term rentals like Airbnb.
In many popular destinations, short-term rental platforms have contributed to rising housing costs, reduced availability of long-term housing, and the displacement of local residents, particularly in historic or culturally significant neighborhoods. In many of these places, the Airbnb owners and operators aren’t locals; they are business that have bought and converted housing into rental units, creating housing shortages, price increases, and housing insecurity for families in these communities.
While this issue is complex and varies by location, it is a well-documented phenomenon in many popular tourist destinations, and it’s an issue I take seriously. Because these issues are complex, there often isn’t one “right” and one “wrong” solution, but I try to keep these issues in mind and discourage short-term rentals in the cities and neighborhoods that are most notably affected.
Ethical travel means thinking beyond convenience. Whenever possible, I aim to support accommodation models that respect local communities, sustain neighborhood life, and ensure tourism contributes positively rather than placing additional strain on already-popular destinations.
Airbnb Isn’t for Everyone — and That’s Okay
Airbnb can still be the right choice for some travelers. If you decide to book one independently, I completely understand. There’s no judgment — and I’m always happy to support other aspects of your trip.
I simply can’t make Airbnb bookings or intervene with the host or with Airbnb if issues arise.
